Get to Know… Dan!

What made you decide to come and work with a bunch of digital geeks?

Vovia constantly pushes the boundaries of online marketing. Everyone at the office is an expert in their field and they’re always more than willing to tell you about new advancements and how they can help others with it. We are a very flat company that thrives on collaboration, which makes the atmosphere amazing. If you had an opportunity to work with the best, would you turn down that offer?

So how do you fit into the Vovia picture?

I am a Search Engine Marketing (SEM) specialist, which means I’m involved with both the development and execution of online advertising campaigns. At a very high level, I am a professional nerd who loves numbers and meeting my clients’ goals every month.

Sounds…Nerdy

Sure is, but I love my job! Every day I get to help both my clients and Vovia move forward and stay fresh. If we are using the same tactics that we were 3 months ago, something is not right. That’s how dynamic digital marketing is and recognizing this allows us to consistently provide outstanding results.

Also, we have 3 “office dogs” who are always happy to distract you when you need a break at the agency.

We hear you’re originally from Ontario. What made you choose life out west?

I was definitely drawn here by the mountains. I am an avid snowboarder and mountain biker, so Ontario just wasn’t doing it for me. I moved to Calgary without even visiting the city first and it was honestly the best decision of my life! I’m always on the lookout for a new adventure, and Calgary has plenty to offer on that front. With every day that passes, I love it more and more.

How did you get into marketing?

I became interested in digital marketing while attending Fanshawe College. I was enrolled in the Business Administration—Marketing program. Here I was fortunate enough to attend a Google Adwords course, where my prof taught us all about the world of Digital Marketing. She was full of enthusiasm and I was hooked from day 1. Later on I entered the “Google Online Marketing Challenge”, where we were given a $250 budget to aid a local London catering business with their online presence. Being able to track all the data and stats in real time was just so exciting and I knew in that exact moment that I wanted to be in this industry.

What else do you like to do for fun?

Seeing as I’ve only been here for 7 months, I’m always out exploring Calgary and Alberta as a whole. The food and restaurants, in particular, are of great interest to me. It’s always fun to check out the best reviewed restaurants and to indulge in all new kinds of dishes.

Alberta itself is full of outdoor activities and everyone here is always down to join in on the fun. As mentioned before, I love to snowboard and mountain bike so I try and get out and do that as often as possible. Also, Calgary has a youthful vibe that is very hard to find anywhere else. It’s pretty fun to be a part of that. Otherwise, I am always striving to find new things that will help advance me as a person and as a professional.
